Hello everyone! I hope your pre-midterms Sunday is going well.
On Tim Alberta and southern Latino voters
I was going to do a post specifically about Tim Alberta’s recent piece in The Atlantic, “Why Democrats are Losing Hispanic Voters”, but it would basically have been a repost of my Ruy Teixeira newsletter.
Instead, I’ll just say that Tim Alberta is a wonderful reporter. He presents meta-stories through the power of deep dive anecdotes. In his recent piece for The Atlantic he attempts to show how Democrats are in severe trouble with the Latino vote in places like Arizona, Texas and Florida. Alberta talks to a lot of Latino politicos and activists and their frustration with Latino outreach by the Democratic party.
As in Nevada, Univision recently released polls of Latino voters for AZ, TX and FL. For some reason the poll for Florida was all in Spanish and I couldn’t get Google to translate that page for me. But the polls in AZ and TX show remarkably similar results as the Univision poll for NV.
Instead of reposting the results in their entireties here are a couple of datapoints that tell me that talk of Latino voters abandoning the Democratic party are based more on conservative wishful thinking than on kind of hard data. And while anecdotes are great, they are not data.
Latinos support Kelly over Masters 60/23 +37
Latinos support Hobbs over Lake 56/26 +30
Latinos support Democrats over Republicans in a generic poll 57/27 +30
Latinos view more Democrats really care about Hispanic issues versus Republicans 70/39 +31
Latinos view congressional Democrats more favorably than congressional Republicans 60/32 +28
Latinos support Beto over Abbott 58/28 +30
Latinos support Democrats over Republicans in a generic poll 55/30 +25
Latinos view more Democrats really care about Hispanic issues versus Republicans 70/43 +27
Latinos view congressional Democrats more favorably than congressional Republicans 59/34 +25

Well, that was awkward
Woke up this morning to this wonderful little clip from Fox News interviewing incumbent Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt-R. He didn’t see it coming.
Two days before an election as the incumbent in OK where you are up by 3.2. You go for your softball interview at Conservatism, Inc’s flagship station and that’s what you’re hit with.
Did Shannon Bream not get the message that she’s supposed to go easy on these guys before their big day?
Maybe a little payback for Fox’s preferred 2024 nominee Ron DeSanctimonious?
Oh, and in case you didn’t know, I did not make that name up.
Well, who did then?
Glad you asked. That leads us to . . .
DeSantis finally gets his Trump nickname
This was brutal.
Listen, I can’t stand Trump just as much as the next guy. But that was a master class in going for the political jugular. And Trump made it look easy.
Ron DeSantis’s campaign just hours earlier dropped the “God Made a Soldier” ad. It’s gross. It’s icky. And it’s totally on brand for DeSantis. You don’t have to watch it, but here it is. At least listen with your eyes closed.
Less than 24 hours later Trump did the evisceration.
Ron, let this serve as notice that you thought you were playing it cute by being coy about whether or not you’re running in 2024. You raised money from big donors. You openly supported candidates the Big Guy said not to support. You hit Trump on being vaccinated. You wouldn’t tell Charlie Crist if you’d commit to finishing out a second four year term.
You think this guy forgets? You think he forgives? Six months from now we’ll look back and see that Ron DeSantis’s political career was murdered at a rally in Pennsylvania last night.
But, as the Don would say, nothing personal, kid.

So far the feedback I have been receiving is very humbling. Thank you to everyone that has subscribed. I never imagined even ten people would be interested enough.
Drop a comment. Let me know how you’re doing. Are you getting through the 2022 election cycle ok? Maybe post your best coping method and share with the class.
Thank you again everyone and please share this with anyone you might feel is interested.
Good! And I did.
The DeSantis ad was definitely cringe-worthy. It’s profoundly disturbing to realize there are voters who will nod their heads at every creepy bit of it. For authentic Christians, it should be perceived as blasphemy.
